Dear Friend,
As you know, every Flyaway project is created in deep partnership between activists and artists. We’ve shared the story behind DOWN ON THE CORNER, our coalition with the TurkxTaylor Initiative, and our movement to transform 111 Taylor.
This week, I want to share more about the artists—in addition to our amazing dancers—who will bring their unique talents to DOWN ON THE CORNER:
MUSIC THAT JOINS US: We are thrilled to work with Melanie DeMore who will create original music for DOWN ON THE CORNER. Melanie is a 3-time Grammy nominated singer/composer, choral conductor, music director, and vocal activist. She will create music that invites everyone to participate. On the 59th anniversary of the Compton’s Cafeteria Riot, Melanie will lead a participatory choir with the audience, marking a sonic invocation of transformation for 111 Taylor.
PROJECTIONS THAT TRANSFORM: For obvious reasons, we cannot dance on 111 Taylor itself, however, we are excited to collaborate with Leila Weefur, an artist, writer, and curator. Through film and installation, they examine the performative elements connected to systems of belonging, present in Black, queer, gender-variant life. Leila will create videos that we will project onto the corner, invoking visual transformation, resistance and resilience.
When you support Flyaway, you support a team of local artists whose work illuminates pathways to liberation. |
