IF I GIVE YOU MY SORROWS transforms the intimate space of a bed—typically associated with comfort, rest, and safety—into a powerful tool to explore the day-to-day experience of incarceration. In this apparatus-based dance performance, custom-fabricated beds hang suspended from the ceiling, their headboards and footboards eerily reminiscent of prison bars.
In the air and back down again, the dancers weave stories of confinement and resilience. Formerly incarcerated activist Betty McKay's voice resonates through the performance space, her words stark and haunting: "I don't ever remember being comfortable on that bed. 27 years. It was hard, very hard every day. It never felt like my bed."
