Thank you for your support of Flyaway Productions!
What if your bed...
was the only place you felt safe?

didn’t provide much comfort at all?

IF I GIVE YOU MY SORROWS transforms the intimate space of a bed—typically associated with comfort, rest, and safety—into a powerful tool to explore the day-to-day experience of incarceration. In this apparatus-based dance performance, custom-fabricated beds hang suspended from the ceiling, their headboards and footboards eerily reminiscent of prison bars.

In the air and back down again, the dancers weave stories of confinement and resilience. Formerly incarcerated activist Betty McKay's voice resonates through the performance space, her words stark and haunting: "I don't ever remember being comfortable on that bed. 27 years. It was hard, very hard every day. It never felt like my bed."

Come see our remounted performance of IF I GIVE YOU MY SORROWS at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Also visit The Only Door I Can Open—an immersive multimedia exhibition curated from within prison—before and after each show.

Support Women Affected by the Los Angeles Fires

Sunday, January 26, 2025
Sunday at 5PM

The fires in Los Angeles and the surrounding areas have reached far and wide. As we have seen with other “natural” disasters, people who are already impacted by racism and other forms of injustice are among the hardest hit.

Jo’s dear friend Flaurie Imberman ( whom she organizes with at Bend the Arc) and Jo are moved to build broad support for women with incarcerated loved ones impacted by these fires. Essie Justice Group, with whom Flyaway has partnered with,  has shared that, “Hundreds of our members are also navigating loss of wages and are suffering the harm of unsafe air quality and lack of clean water access. We also know that many of our members are unable to leave the immediate area because their loved ones are incarcerated locally, some of them included in the 900+ incarcerated people on the frontlines fighting the wildfires without recognition or fair pay.”

Please join us for a brief, virtual gathering on Sunday, January 26, at 5pm.

We will learn more about Essie’s mission and work, and talk about why this group of women is dear to our hearts. We will also share information about ways to support these women and their families.

Please let us know if you can attend this 45 minute gathering by Registering Here

You can support Essie's members impacted by the fires Here.

We hope to see you on the 26th at 5pm.
