TRUST FALL Vertical Dance Lab
with Becca Dean
January 11 & 12
10:00-13:30
In this vertical dance workshop, we will explore ways to build trust in ourselves, our bodies, and each other so that we may fall, with soft, intuitive skill, into the unknown. We will sharpen our senses and reflexes in the vertical plane and then ramp up into fluid and dynamic dance and playful improvisational scores. This workshop is designed for all bodies: day one is geared towards improvers, and day two is geared towards skilled and advanced vertical dancers. Prior movement experience is recommended and a willingness to play and fail is encouraged.
Becca Dean (they/them) is a long time core dancer and Associate Artistic Director of BANDALOOP. They have performed across 6 continents, in theaters, nightclubs, stadiums, on skyscrapers, cliffs and cranes, at Santiago a Mil International Theater Festival, Mupa Budapest, Art and About Sydney, Barents Spektakel Norway and in the American Music Awards with P!NK. They have danced with airborne apparatuses in Jo Kreiter’s Flyaway Productions and remounted a low fly trapeze duet under the direction of Terry Sendgraff. Their vertical work is informed by their contemporary dance practice on the ground with Sean Dorsey Dance, Joe Goode Performance Group and our dearly departed Kathleen Hermesdorf. Becca teaches mindful movement to veterans and people with Parkinson’s and engages in choreographic residencies in schools across the Bay Area. They hold a BFA in modern dance from the University of Utah and are graduate of the Moving On Center School of Somatic Research. Becca has facilitated vertical dance workshops for 12 years, prioritizing a culture of care, safety and accessibility as a gateway to vertical joy and rigorous practice.
