In 2006, BLL staged Requiem, an aerial dance piece utilizing an infamous Austin eyesore, the Intel Shell. This quietly epic aerial ballet transformed the decaying structure and its audience of nearly 14,000, fixing Blue Lapis Light in the firmament of Central Texas' creative culture. This September, BLL will return to the vicinity of the original site to stage In Light, a new aerial dance work on the IBC Bank building (1 block from the site of Requiem).
The stunning performances of In Light will both recall elements of Requiem and coalesce with downtown Austin's new identity. Sixteen performers suspended on ropes and Chinese poles will dance across the face of the building, conveying a transcendent journey of darkness into light. Collaborations with Austin's Ilios Lighting and projectionist Jeff Kurihara to digitally map IBC Bank will add an exciting new visual layer to this piece.
