This April, Flyaway is turning 29, Jo is turning 60, and America is turning a dark corner. 29 years ago this month we were in the final throws of preparing our first evening length piece, HOIST at Brady Street Studio—a performance space that no longer exists. 30 years ago this April, Jo made a chocolate on chocolate birthday cake to celebrate her 30th year living as an independent artist and an independent woman in the city she loves. 30 years ago today we did not imagine that students would be disappeared off the streets for expressing their political points of view. We did not imagine an executive branch activating power it has no legal right to. But here we are. Flyaway loves the work that we do. We love our GIRLFLY youth. We love the buildings in the Tenderloin that give us a launching point from which to suspend ourselves in the air. We love coalition building with partners who share our vision. We love the team of artists with whom we collaborate. They bring their best imagination, engineering, and physicality to our dance making. We do not love this political moment. We find it scarier each day. But we are here with you living through it, in resistance and in solidarity. We could not let this month of April go by without saying so. |
